Photoshop/Unraveling the Printer Resolution

Print quality depends on the printer's resolution, measured in dots per inch (dpi). The higher the dpi value, the better the clarity of the printed image. Most inkjet printers operate at resolutions between 720 and 2,880 dpi.

Image Resolution and Printer Resolution: Understanding the Relationship:

Although different, the image resolution is related to the printer resolution. To obtain high-quality prints from inkjet printers, an image resolution of at least 220 ppi is recommended.

Screen Frequency: Setting Print Quality:

Screen frequency, also known as "lineage" or "halftone screen", determines the number of dots or halftone cells per inch used when printing grayscale or color images. This measurement is expressed in lines per inch (lpi). The higher the resolution of the output device, the higher the screen frequency that can be used.

Getting the Best Print Quality:

The relationship between image resolution and screen frequency defines the sharpness of details in the print. To achieve the highest quality in halftone prints, an image resolution about 1.5 to 2 times the screen frequency is generally used.

Additional Considerations:

In some cases and with certain output devices, lower resolutions may yield satisfactory results. To determine your printer's screen frequency, consult the manufacturer's manual or contact your service provider.

Beware: Certain 600 dpi photocomposers and laser printers utilize halftone screening technologies that differ from conventional halftones. When printing images on non-halftone printers, refer to your service provider or the printer's manual for suggested image resolutions.

A. Low-resolution screen (65 lpi): Typically used for simple printing tasks like newsletters and supermarket coupons.

B. Medium-resolution screen (85 lpi): Commonly employed for printing newspapers, offering a good balance between quality and cost.

C. High-resolution screen (133 lpi): Delivers sharp and vibrant prints, perfect for four-color magazines and other materials that demand high image quality.

D. Ultra-high-resolution screen (177 lpi): Ideal for printing tasks that require exceptional quality, such as annual reports and art book images, where every detail needs to be flawless.
